FAQ

  • MEMA is a platform of the Global Centre for Green Fuels (GCGF), launched in October 2025 to unify the global alcohol fuel ecosystem for shipping. It brings together producers, shipowners, charterers, OEMs, ports, class societies, and traders around a shared goal: making ethanol and methanol scalable, credible low-carbon fuel options for maritime. MEMA is technology-neutral but fuel-specific – supporting both neat and blended ethanol and methanol marine fuels – and works across four Working Groups: Policy, Technical, Safe Handling & Bunkering, and Fuels & Logistics.

  • Most existing associations are organized around a single fuel or a single part of the value chain. MEMA is built specifically around ethanol and methanol together, and brings the full chain onto one platform – producers, shipowners, ports, regulators, and OEMs – so that policy, safety, and technology work move in step rather than in separate, disconnected tracks. MEMA is also technology-neutral within its scope: it doesn't advocate for one alcohol fuel over the other, but evaluates both on the same basis.

  • MEMA welcomes ethanol and methanol producers (bio and e-fuels), shipowners and operators, port authorities and bunkering hubs, engine and equipment OEMs, class societies and regulators, fuel suppliers and traders, and industry media and pricing agencies. Participation is free of charge during the current consultative phase.
