What Makes Mema Different

MEMA is one of the few industry platforms dedicated specifically to ethanol and methanol while remaining pathway-neutral. The Alliance supports fuels produced through a range of lower-carbon pathways, including both biofuels and e-fuels, as well as their use as neat fuels or compatible blends where technically appropriate.

Most industry initiatives focus on a single aspect of the maritime transition, such as policy, technology development, infrastructure, or fuel supply.

MEMA takes an ecosystem approach.

By bringing together fuel producers, shipowners, ports, regulators, class societies, OEMs, technology providers, traders, and researchers, MEMA creates a forum where technical, regulatory, operational, and commercial discussions take place together rather than in isolation. This helps reduce fragmentation, improve industry alignment, and accelerate the deployment of ethanol and methanol as marine fuels.

How We Work

Deployment-Focused by Design

MEMA is focused on one objective: helping move ethanol and methanol from industry interest to real-world deployment.

MEMA's work is structured around four dedicated Working Groups, each tackling a distinct condition for scaling alcohol fuels in shipping. Rather than operating in silos, the groups are designed to reinforce one another – linking regulatory progress, technology readiness, operational capability and fuel availability into a single pathway to deployment.

Policy

Supports informed engagement with IMO, ISO, EU, and national regulatory frameworks, including fuel specifications, lifecycle assessment, feedstock considerations, and standards development.

Technical

Advances fuel compatibility, blending, engine technologies, testing programmes, materials evaluation, and vessel applications.

Safe Handling & Bunkering

Supports the development of operational procedures, crew and operator training, electronic bunker delivery note systems, sampling standards, and bunkering pilots.

Fuels & Logistics

Addresses supply, storage, certification, physical availability, offtake development, and bunkering infrastructure needed to scale alcohol fuels globally.

Together, these workstreams help industry stakeholders understand emerging opportunities, identify practical solutions, and support the responsible deployment of ethanol and methanol as marine fuels.
